Tightly woven cotton prevents particles from passing through gaps in the fibers, silk provides an electrostatic charge which traps particles. Materials such as silk are particularly effective (considering their sheerness) at excluding particles in the nanoscale regime (<~100nm), likely due to electrostatic effects that result in charge transfer with nanoscale aerosol particles.
